TOPIC: The Escape Route

TEXT: Matthew 11:20-30

KEY VERSE: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mathew 11:28).

 MESSAGE: Practical experiences during childhood reveals that, it isn’t all the threats or lies aimed at creating fear in the child that are real. Most times, an inquisitive child soon discovers that nothing like the foretold consequences happens. This often emboldens him/her to flout other instructions believing that there would be no serious adverse consequence after all.

This same scenario, no doubt, plays itself out in the attitude of most people concerning the stern warning of Christ to the religious, carefree and impenitent of the dire consequences of their sinful lifestyle. We need to understand that God is not a man. His words will ever be true and He has appointed a day for judgment of evil men and women. Many justify their rebellion against God on the grounds that many church leaders and religious people commit sin without any consequence.

The Scripture describes the unfortunate condition thus: “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil” (Ecclesiastes 8:11). It should, however, be noted that no sinner will go unpunished, because on the judgment day, God will not be swayed by money, emotion or any other factor.

The sure way of escape is repentance and faith in Christ as revealed through the solemn invitation in our text. Those who reject the invitation of Christ to repentance today will one day face the sordid reality of judgment in hell. Be wise to repent by acknowledging, confessing and forsaking your sins so that heaven can rejoice over you too. Pray for pardon.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The wheel of God’s judgment may drive slowly, but it is imminent.

TOPIC: Separation From the Crowd

SCRIPTURE: Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 2 Corinthians 6:17.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Conformity is the foundation for uniformity of calamity; to flow with the crowd is to be lost in the crowd.

Seeds of Destiny Daily Devotional 17 October 2018 Message: Sometime ago, I heard the story of a high ranking Christian officer in the Nigerian army. One day, other officers were organizing a party and this high-ranking Christian Officer was invited to be part of it. In the course of the preparation, this Christian officer asked his fellow officers if alcohol would be served in the party and the other officers answered in the affirmative. Then he said, “If alcohol would be served, then I won’t be involved and my money would not be part of it.” Then after some deliberations, they said, “What is the use of even serving alcohol in the first place? We will not serve alcohol in the party. There is no need.’ They told the Christian officer. So, the Christian officer responded, ‘In that case, I will attend the party.’

The lesson from this story is: only one man changed the order of a major event because of solidity of Godly character. You too can change the sinful opinion or attitude of an overwhelming majority with your Godly character if you refuse to join them or compromise.

Beloved, your separation from the crowd guarantees your safety in life. Conformity is the foundation for uniformity of calamity; if you conform to the world, the same calamity that confronts the world will befall you. To flow with the crowd is to be lost in the crowd. That shall not be your portion in Jesus’ Name.

To be the best, you must be yourself. The desire to be like somebody is the reason for so many nobodies. You cannot make a difference in your generation until you are clearly different.

My counsel is, make up your mind to be different from other people.

REMEMBER THIS: Conformity is the foundation for uniformity of calamity; to flow with the crowd is to be lost in the crowd.

Seeds of Destiny Daily Devotional 17 October 2018 ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Avoid the wrong company.
2. Determine to be clearly different for God wherever you find yourself.
PRAYER: O Lord, I ask for mercy in any area I might have conformed to the world. I receive the grace to standout for Christ even in the midst of confrontations and contradictions Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Bible in a Year: Isaiah 50–52; 1 Thessalonians 5

Scripture: Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant. Nehemiah 1:11

Our Daily Bread Devotional 17 October 2018 Message: I respect my Aunt Gladys’s intrepid spirit, even if that very spirit concerns me sometimes. The source of my concern came in the form of news she shared in an email: “I cut down a walnut tree yesterday.”

You must understand that my chainsaw-wielding aunt is seventy-six years old! The tree had grown up behind her garage. When the roots threatened to burst through the concrete, she knew it had to go. But she did tell us, “I always pray before I tackle a job like that.”

While serving as butler to the king of Persia during the time of Israel’s exile, Nehemiah heard news concerning the people who had returned to Jerusalem. Some work needed to be done. “The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire” (Nehemiah 1:3). The broken walls left them vulnerable to attack by enemies. Nehemiah had compassion for his people and wanted to get involved. But prayer came first, especially since a new king had written a letter to stop the building efforts in Jerusalem (see Ezra 4). Nehemiah prayed for his people (Nehemiah 1:5–10), and then asked God for help before requesting permission from the king to leave (v. 11).

Is prayer your response? It’s always the best way to face any task or trial in life.

Our Daily Bread Devotional 17 October 2018 Prayer: Father, Your Holy Spirit reminds us to pray first. Today, we commit to doing so as Your Spirit prompts us.

Thought for the Day: Make prayer a first priority, instead of a last resort.

Billy Graham Devotional 17 October 2018 – Searching for Peace?

Topic: Searching for Peace?

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee … — Isaiah 26:3

Are you searching for peace? Are you longing for it? You thought you would find it if you made a lot of money, but you didn’t find it. You thought you would find it in getting and accumulating a lot of knowledge, so you got all the degrees you could, but you didn’t find it, this peace.

You’ve searched the religions of the world, but you haven’t found it. There are a thousand ways you’ve turned, trying to find peace, but you haven’t found it. When you come to Christ by an act of faith, He gives you the Holy Spirit who produces the fruit of the Spirit and gives you the peace that passes all understanding.

Prayer for the day: Your presence fills my mind with peace, Lord, bringing into perspective all that I need—You, my heavenly Father.

Topic: Just Give It Time

Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine. — Exodus 19:5

When you spend time with God, it becomes evident. You become calmer, you’re easier to get along with, you are more joyful, and you remain stable in every situation.

Spending quality time with God is an investment that yields rich benefits. You begin to understand what He likes and what offends Him. As with any friend, the more time you spend with God, the more like Him you become.

Spending time with God causes you to become more sensitive to the love He wants to demonstrate to you and to others. Your conscience alerts you when you’re talking to someone in a way that does not please Him.

Your heart grieves when He grieves, and you quickly pray, “Oh, God, I’m sorry.” You soon want to apologize to the person you have offended and discover that saying, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you,” isn’t so difficult after all.

When God told Moses he had found favor in His eyes (see Exodus 33:12), Moses understood that God was telling him he could ask for anything his heart desired.

Moses responded by saying that he simply wanted to become more intimately acquainted with God. Moses had seen God perform history’s most magnificent miracles, yet what he wanted most of all was to know God intimately.

I pray that knowing God is the desire of your heart. You can know Him and hear His voice as clearly and as intimately as you want to. All it takes is spending time with Him.

Prayer Starter: Father, like Moses, I want to know You more intimately. Help me to take time to grow closer to You and develop a deep, personal relationship. Help me to become more like You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Memorise: “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”– 2 Corinthians 8:9

Read: 1 Timothy 2:3-6 (KJV)

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Bible in One Year: Jeremiah 1-2, Luke 7:18-35

MESSAGE:
In ancient times, a ransom was a price paid to secure the freedom of a slave, captive or prisoner. It had to be paid in full in order to cancel a debt or obligation, set one free from liabilities and charges, or secure an exemption from punishment. A ransom is associated with redemption, atonement, deliverance and salvation. In every situation requiring the payment of a ransom, victims are helpless because they cannot effect the payment of their own ransom. In the same sense, humanity was in a hopeless situation because we lacked what was required to pay the price for our liberation from the penalty of sin. Thank God that Jesus Christ stepped in as a substitute for all humanity, paying our ransom in full. The ransom He paid is effective for anyone on the face of the earth who by faith in the word of God receives salvation as a gift of God through Jesus Christ. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus said:

“Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Through His suffering, painful death on the cross and glorious resurrection on the third day, He paid in full every price demanded for the redemption, atonement, deliverance and salvation of humanity. Therefore, if you are still under any form of bondage, receive your freedom now in the mighty Name of Jesus.

Now that Jesus Christ has paid our ransom in full and completely wiped away everything contrary to our destiny in God, what next? The answer is found in Romans 6:22:

“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.”

God expects that having freed you from the shackles of sin, you will not return to its bondage again. You ought to remain free by walking in holiness, exercising the power to live above sin that God has deposited in you (Romans 6:14). The end result of staying true to this is everlasting life. 1 Peter 1:15-16 says,

“15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

We are called out of sin to live a holy life. Jesus paid your ransom in full; now, show appreciation and reciprocate His love by living holy as from today.

 Action Point:
Thank the Lord for the ransom He paid in full on your behalf. Think over any area of life where you are in bondage and prayerfully

Tuesday Hymn 7: Wonderful Story Of Love.
1. Wonderful story of love;
Tell it to me again;
Wonderful story of love;
Wake the immortal strain!
Angels with rapture announce it,
Shepherds with wonder receive it;
Sinner, oh, won’t you believe it?
Wonderful story of love.

Chorus:
Wonderful! Wonderful!
Wonderful, wonderful story of love.

2. Wonderful story of love;
Though you are far away;
Wonderful story of love;
Still He doth call today;
Calling from Calvary’s mountain,
Down from the crystal-bright fountain,
E’en from the dawn of creation,
Wonderful story of love.

3. Wonderful story of love;
Jesus provides a rest;
Wonderful story of love;
For all the pure and blest,
Rest in those mansions above us,
With those who’ve gone on before us,
Singing the rapturous chorus,
Wonderful story of love.
