TOPIC: LOVE OF GOD’S LAW

Text: Psalm 119:97-104 (KJV)

Key Verse: “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day“ (Psalm 119:97).

MESSAGE:

A doctorate student embarked on a peculiar project to disprove the claims of the Bible. He set forth on this doctoral thesis with a devious intent to disclaim Christians’ profession of the Bible as God’s Book and its acclaimed effect on peoples’ lives. In the process of carrying out his study, he became converted and the same Bible he sought to disprove transformed his life. He later became a preacher of the Bible in countless universities the world over.

The psalmist in our text prayed to God. Each verse addresses God directly, with no petition; only adoration and personal testimony. He declared his love for the law of God and stated how he meditated on the word of God all day which made him wiser than his enemies and gave him more understanding than his teachers. He did not only read and meditate on God’s word, he also obeyed the precepts. This restrained him from committing sin and hating every false way. This should be the testimony of all believers in Christ.

The Holy Bible is the Book of books. It is the inspired Word. Its primary purpose is to give mankind a revelation of God. It has solution to every problem, clarity to every mystery and a message for every man. No Christian can live successfully without the Bible; likewise, no Christian worker or minister can be qualified for the ministry without a thorough knowledge of it.

To discover hidden treasures in the Bible, all hindrances to spiritual receptivity must be removed. The Christian, like the psalmist, must have undying love for the Word and read it daily, cherish, treasure and obey its truths and commands to sustain a close relationship with God and remain uncompromising until the end.

Thought For The Day: The Bible is the word of God; love it, read it and obey it.

Topic: Delight Yourself

Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments…. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord. – Psalm 112:1, 7

The man who makes a habit of delighting in God’s Word will have a heart that’s fixed! He can make it through disastrous situations without losing his balance. His mind’s made up before he ever gets to the disaster. He’s victorious before he ever gets there. A person like that is hard to whip!

The sad thing is that most believers wait until the disaster hits before they start trying to establish themselves on the Word. They wait until their back is against the wall. Then, suddenly, they get real spiritual and start fasting and praying…and all too often they find they’ve started too late.

That’s like a guy who finds out a burglar is in his house and then starts looking for the barbells, so he can build up enough muscle to throw the burglar out. He’s not going to make it! If he’d been working out instead of watching television every night, he’d have been ready. But as it is, he’s headed for a painful defeat.

Be ready before the devil breaks into your house. Get your heart fixed. Turn off the television. Turn off the distractions of the world and turn on the Word. The time to start establishing yourself on it is right now!

Topic: He Is Our “ABBA”

Mark 14:36 “And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.“

Although God was referred to as our Father in the Old Testament, Jesus’ frequent use of this title brought a whole new understanding of our relationship with God. Jesus referred to God as His Father, and He spoke of God as being our Father as well. This infuriated the religious Jews of Jesus’ day who considered it blasphemy to call God their Father, because they understood that to mean they were equal with God.

We are instructed to call God our Father, revealing the kind, gentle, loving nature of our God. The term “Abba” is an affectionate term that a young child calls his father, which corresponds to our term “daddy.” It is a term used to express intimacy and affectionate fondness. It removes the idea of God as a strict judge and carries the image of Him as a loving Father who cares, understands, and is our best friend. “Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (1 Jn. 3:1).

We are sons of God by adoption. Jesus was the Son of God by nature. As Jesus said to the Jews, ye are of your Father the devil (Jn. 8:44; Eph. 2:3).

However, Jesus purchased us and made us adopted sons of God.

We are not just heirs, we are joint-heirs with Christ. To think that we share equally with the one who has inherited everything God is, and has, is beyond comprehension.

Billy Graham Devotional 7 November 2018 – Compassion for Others

Topic: Compassion for Others

Let us love one another; for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. . . . And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God love his brother also. — 1 John 4:7,21

If you would know the measure of your love for God, just observe your love for your fellowman. Our compassion for others is an accurate gauge of our devotion to God.

Some time ago, with some friends, I went through a museum in San Francisco. Among other things, we saw a collection of instruments of torture which were employed by religious people to force other people to believe as they did. History is largely the record of man’s inhumanity to man.

Prayer for the day: Lord God, fill my heart that I may love with the compassion of Jesus.

Topic: Be Kind to Those Who Aren’t Kind to You

And be kind to one another… — Ephesians 4:32

Christmas is the season of good cheer, but it often becomes a season of stress…so much shopping, wrapping, cooking, baking and visiting with friends and relatives. Before you know it, people are losing patience and snapping at one another. It’s easy to become unkind.

I’ll never forget something my daughter told me a long time ago. She said that her goal was to learn to love or to treat with kindness, goodness and mercy every single person she encountered who was unkind or ugly to her. She said, “That’s my goal. I want to submit to God in my emotions and the way that I handle myself so that when I’m out in public and someone mistreats me, I respond with kindness.”

She said, “One of the things that God has shown me that really helps me to do this is, when someone is grouchy toward me, I can get angry and frustrated or I think: I don’t know what this person is going through. Maybe right now her back hurts terribly. Maybe she has a horrible migraine headache. Maybe this grumpy man at the meat counter at the grocery store has a child who just died last week. Maybe he is carrying a financial burden that feels too heavy for him. Maybe that woman’s husband walked out on her and is living with another woman. Maybe this man has just been told he’s losing his job at the end of the week.

We don’t know what’s going on in people’s lives.

Kindness will cause you to slow down and give people some space and some grace. People are under so much stress that half of the time they don’t even realize what they’re doing. Life was not meant to be the way it is today. We were not meant to live at the fast pace at which we live, with thousands of things coming at us at once. Stress and overload are the disease of the twenty-first century, and it makes people grouchy. People don’t have time for each other anymore. We don’t even have time to talk to anyone.

I think we’ve lost sight of some important things in life and that we need to put kindness back on our priority lists!

Love Others Today: Help me, Lord to be especially kind to people who are not kind to me.

Topic: Unprofitable Servant

Text: Matthew 25:14-30 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth“ (Matthew 25:30).

MESSAGE:

Beginning with a lord who travels “into a far country”, the parable moves on to tell of how he leaves his servants with various amounts of resources to work with. No one is left without something to keep him busy while the master was away. Naturally, their lord expects good returns for this generous investment. Two of the men made judicious use of what was given them, while the third buried what was given to him. He buried himself as it were!

It is worthy to note that the parable was presented towards the end of our Lord’s ministry on earth. The allegory is correctly called the parable of the talents because what the Lord describes as “goods” were really talents or gifts, abilities and resources, which God has graciously given to everyone He created, including the sinner and the rebellious.

The Lord expects the sinner and the backslider to apply the gifts of existence and their free will to respond to the gospel of salvation offered by Christ. He expects them to turn from sin, believe in Him and escape the wrath of God. Believers are also endowed with enormous resources to exploit to serve God. They have been blessed with physical energy, time, education, the living gospel, the sanctified Church, the Holy Ghost’s power, modern Information Technology tools and so on. We must use these gifts to seek lost souls as we await the Lord’s return.

The diligent Christians must not be like the unprofitable servant. Rather, they should channel their skills in administration, music, writing, electricals and electronics, oration, mentorship, teaching, etc., towards bringing souls out of the pool of sin and edifying believers in the church of God. As stewards of all that the Lord has given, profit must be made in His service.

Thought For The Day: Don’t be over-protective of your talents; use them for the kingdom of God.
