Billy Graham Devotional 31 October 2018

Topic: Hope for the Future

For our citizenship is in heaven; from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.— Philippians 3:20 (NASB)

If you are moving to a new home, you want to know all about the community to which you are going. And since we will spend eternity some place, we ought to know something about it. The information concerning heaven is found in the Bible. When we talk about heaven, earth grows shabby by comparison. Our sorrows and problems here seem so much less, when we have keen anticipation of the future.

In a certain sense the Christian has heaven here on earth. He has peace of soul, peace of conscience, and peace with God. In the midst of troubles and difficulties he can smile. He has a spring in his step, a joy in his soul, a smile on his face. But the Bible also promises the Christian a heaven in the life hereafter.

Prayer for the day: Father, as I face whatever trials come my way, I will take heart in the glorious promise of heaven—knowing I shall be with You!

Written by Billy Graham, Founder of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association(BGEA). BGEA exists to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by every effective means and to equip the church and others to do the same.

Open Heaven 31 October 2018 – Relationship with Christ

Topic: Relationship with Christ

Memorise: “And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”- John 6:40

Read: John 1:10-13 (KJV)

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Bible in One Year: Jeremiah 32, Luke 13:18-14:6

 MESSAGE:
It is very important for every born-again child of God to have a relationship with Him. The importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ can never be overemphasized. Having a relationship with Him goes beyond accepting Him as Lord and Saviour; it means interacting with Him on a daily basis and involving Him in the running of your everyday life. It is expected of every child to have a cordial relationship with his or her father. This should also be the case with our Lord Jesus Christ, because He is referred to as the Everlasting Father in Isaiah 9:6. If Christ is the Everlasting Father, we must therefore have a beautiful relationship with Him. The Lord Jesus Christ is the best Father anybody can have, because He is loving, kind, tender, merciful and gracious. He is even more caring than any earthly father can ever be. He constantly seeks to have a close relationship with His children, but sadly, many of us are too busy to cultivate a loving relationship with Him. It is unfortunate that which most children of God have with their Father is a ‘take, take, take’ relationship instead of a “give and take” relationship. Any Christian who has a revelation of the evil that God delivered us from through salvation will take his or her relationship with Jesus Christ more seriously. When I became born again and realized how close to hell I was before God saved me, I was ready to do anything for this God. I was grateful that He saved a sinner like me, so much so that all I cared about was pleasing Him.

Another reason why it is important to have a relationship with Christ is that our fate will be committed into His hands by God on the day of judgment. 2 Corinthians 5:10 says:

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

If we don’t have a relationship with Christ now, how will we be able to face Him on the day of judgment? Christ is still full of love and mercy now, and He is still knocking at the door of our hearts and gently asking to be let in. He is right now seated at the Father’s right hand, and advocating for us. However, a time is coming when He will be seated on His judgment seat to judge everyone who refused to accept His offer of mercy when it was available. At that time, His eyes will be full of fire and His entire countenance will be fiery (Daniel 7:9-10, Revelation 20:11-12). There will be no begging or excuses then- it will be judgment without mercy. My advice is that you cultivate a relationship with Him from today.

Prayer Point:
Lord Jesus Christ, help me to cultivate a beautiful relationship with You from today.

 Wednesday Hymn 15: Nearer My God To Thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

There let me see the sight, an open Heaven;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

TOPIC: Spiritual Garment and Eternity Consciousness

SCRIPTURE: And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him… Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. Zechariah 3:1-3

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is not the quality of the physical dress on your body but the purity of your spiritual garment that matters most in life.

MESSAGE: Our anchor Scripture tells us about Joshua, the High Priest. He was a minister of God who was spiritually clothed in filthy garments before the angel of the Lord but appeared clothed in a dignifying attire of a high priest in the physical. So, there are people who are clothed in royal apparel in the physical like King Solomon but appear like vultures, wearing stinky, smelly garments stained with all manner of filth in the realm of the spirit.

Beloved, it is how we look in the spirit that matters most in life. The truth is: knowing and doing what matters most in life guarantees our escape from calamities both in time and in eternity.

So, in continuation of what matters most in life, today, we are looking at:
1. The Purity of Spiritual Garment: It is not the quality of the physical dress on your body but the purity of your spiritual garment that matters most in life.

Seeds of Destiny 31 October 2018 – Spiritual Garment and Eternity Consciousness
2. Where You Are Going to Spend Eternity: It is not where you are going to spend your next holidays that matters most in life but where you are going to spend your eternity. Some people are so desperate to spend their holidays abroad; they are saving money for a trip to Europe, Dubai, etc., but they are not preparing for where they are going to spend their eternity. Where you are going to spend eternity is what matters most in life.

3. The Intensity of the Right Passion: It is not what you drive but what drives you that matters most in life. Your passion determines your portion in life and in eternity.

Beloved, if you do not want to end in regrets both in time and in eternity, reorder your life and let the things that matter most in life really matter to you.

REMEMBER THIS: It is not the quality of the physical dress on your body but the purity of your spiritual garment that matters most in life.

 ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Invest in your spiritual life; feed your spirit with the Word of God and do all you can to maintain the atmosphere of God’s Presence.
2. Live with the consciousness of eternity.

TOPIC: Evil Dividends Of Polygamy

TEXT: GENESIS 30:1-13

KEY VERSE: “And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die” (Genesis 30:1).

MESSAGE: Polygamy breeds envy, jealousy, resentfulness, covetousness, ill will, spleen and bitter hatred. Little wonder then that God, in His infinite wisdom, ordained one man, one wife for humanity. That the two young ladies, Leah and Rachael, were sisters did not prevent them from experiencing the unpalatable consequence of polygamy.

In today’s text, Rachel, green with envy, developed a suicidal tendency. However, Jacob reproved his wife for the graceless statement she made. Rachel failed to know that it is only God that can make barren women mothers of children.

DCLM Daily Manna 31 October 2018 Devotional – Evil Dividends Of Polygamy

From her desperation to have children, she gave Bilhah, her handmaid as wife to Jacob so that she could adopt the children. The error of envy in this decision of hers was that Leah’s children should normally be closer to her than the children of Bilhar, a slave lady. Rachel further demonstrated her envy by christening the two children by her handmaid names that connoted rivalry and strife. Leah in her rivalry later persuaded her husband to marry Zilpah, her own handmaid.

This shows a clear demonstration of the evil, mischief and psychological anguish in polygamy. Jacob might be justified because in his era, there was no Bible to read nor pastor to preach on the danger of polygamy. Do believers of today have any excuse to go into polygamy? No. There is no problem in a Christian marriage that God, in His unlimited power, cannot solve. With faith in God, problems such as barrenness, sickness, poverty, misunderstanding and so on can be fixed and are therefore no excuses for disobeying His word. Believers are to ensure that they hold on to the word of God and preach against polygamy.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Polygamy breeds envy, hatred, bitterness, hypertension and death.

Joyce Meyer Devotional 30 October 2018 — Love Does Something

Topic: Love Does Something

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:7

Our ministry has taken various people on mission trips to minister to desperately needy people, but they don’t all respond the same way. Everyone feels compassion, but some individuals become quite determined to find ways to make a difference.

Indifference makes an excuse, but love finds a way. Everyone can do something!

I remember a woman who decided she had to help in some way. For a while she couldn’t figure out what to do because she had no extra money to contribute and she couldn’t go live on the mission field.

But as she continued to pray about the situation, God encouraged her to look at what she had, not at what she did not have. She realized she was very good at baking cakes, pies and cookies.

So, she asked her pastor if she could bake during the week, and offer her baked goods for sale on Sundays after church as long as the money went to missions. This became a way for her and other church members to be involved in missions, and it kept her active doing something to help someone else.

Another woman is a massage therapist, and she organized a special spa day and donated all the proceeds to help poor people. She raised one—thousand dollars for missions and also testified that the day of giving was life changing for her, those who worked with her, and those who attended.

We all need to be loved, but I believe our personal joy is strongly connected to loving others. Something beautiful happens in our hearts when we give.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to not only feel compassion, but to find creative ways to express my love for others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
